Life around Emberford

The fire everyone actually stays out for. For good.

Nobody should have to shuffle their chair round the fire three times an evening to keep the smoke out of their eyes.

Stop moving your chair

Once it is up to temperature the double wall reburns the smoke before it ever reaches you. You sit where you want to sit, and you go inside smelling like an evening outdoors instead of a bonfire.

Tip the ash. Do not wrestle the pit.

The inner fire pot lifts straight out by hand once it is cool. Tip it, drop it back in, done. No flipping a cold but filthy 9kg drum upside down over your own lawn.

Still straight next season

304 stainless at 9.4kg. The regret stories in this category are all thin no-name steel that warped in a single summer. This is the grade and the weight that does not do that.

Take it with you

A padded carry bag is in the box, not thirty pounds extra. Boot, beach, campsite, a friend’s garden. Nine kilos is a two-handed lift, not a two-person job.

The simple science

Why it burns its own smoke

The double-wall secondary burn inside Emberford: the reason a proper double-wall pit runs bright and clean once it is hot, and a plain steel drum never does.

How the Emberford double wall reburns its smoke: draw, preheat, reburn
1

Draw: it pulls air in at the base

A ring of vents around the bottom feeds air underneath the fire and into the gap between the two stainless walls. The fire is fed from below instead of being smothered by its own ash bed.

2

Preheat: the air superheats as it climbs

That air rises up the cavity between the inner and outer wall, taking heat off the fire the whole way up. By the time it reaches the top it is very hot, and hot oxygen is the entire reason a fire can burn cleanly.

3

Reburn: the smoke gets burned, not breathed

The preheated air fires back inward through the ring of top vents and ignites the smoke coming off the wood. That visible curtain of flame at the rim is smoke being consumed instead of drifting into your eyes. A single-wall drum has no cavity, no preheat and no second burn, so its smoke just leaves.

The honest version: it is low-smoke once it is hot and burning dry, seasoned wood. The first five to ten minutes while it comes up to temperature will smoke, and so will the wind-down. No pit is a magic zero-smoke box, including the £350 one, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you a disappointment.

Everything you want from a fire pit, nothing you don't

Built for wet British gardens
Macro detail of the Emberford perforated 304 stainless upper wall with firelight glowing through

A double wall that reburns its own smoke.

Air is drawn in at the base, superheated as it climbs between the two stainless walls, and fired back inward through the top vents as preheated oxygen. That second burn consumes the smoke particles a plain steel drum just sends straight into your face.

Lift the pot. Tip the ash.

Four pieces, no tools: ring lid, perforated upper pot, a removable inner fire pot and the base. Once cool, the inner pot lifts straight out by hand so you can tip the ash out. No flipping the whole pit over.

304 stainless. 9.4kg. Both published.

We publish the grade and the weight because that is exactly what separates a pit that lasts from the sub-£100 carbon-steel ones that warp in a season. The cheap listings publish neither, and there is a reason for that.

The bag is in the box.

The big American brands sell you the pit, then the stand, then the lid, then a £175 heat deflector, then the shelter, and your £300 pit is a £610 project. Emberford arrives with its padded carry bag and no accessory ladder waiting for you.

“Is it actually smokeless , or is that just marketing?”

Fair question, and the single biggest complaint in this entire category. We are going to answer it honestly, which means partly against ourselves. Here is the truth.

Low-smoke once hot. Not zero-smoke, ever.

Light it and it will smoke for the first five to ten minutes while the walls come up to temperature. Once the secondary burn kicks in it runs clean and bright, and it will smoke again as it dies down. That is true of every smokeless pit ever made, including the £350 one. Anyone promising you zero smoke is lying.

Dry, seasoned wood, or it will not work

Wet or green wood spends the fire’s energy boiling water out of itself, so you get smoke instead of a second burn. This is by far the most common reason someone decides their pit is faulty. Dry hardwood, split small, kept off the ground. Get that right and it behaves every time.

It is ambience heat, not a patio heater

The same airflow that makes it clean also drives the heat upward rather than outward. It is a bright, warm fire to sit close around, not a heater that warms a whole garden from four metres back. If you want radiant heat at a distance, buy a chiminea and we will not be offended.

Still unsure?

Burn it for a season. If it is not right, send it back within 30 days for a full refund, and the 2-year Larkstead guarantee stands behind it after that.

The honest maths

What a smokeless fire pit actually costs

Same goal: a clean, bright fire in the garden. Three very different bills.

Option 1

The badge brand

£460–£610 all-in

A Solo Stove or Breeo is genuinely excellent kit. Then it is the stand, then the lid, then a £175 heat deflector, then the shelter, and the £300 pit you were sold is a £610 project. With these brands, the pit is never the price.

Option 2

The sub-£100 no-name

“Cheap”, until it warps

Thin carbon steel, a single wall or a token gap, with no grade and no weight published anywhere, because neither number would help them. The regret reviews all read the same: it warped, it rusted, it lasted one summer.

Option 3

Emberford

£128.00 today

The same double-wall secondary burn as the badge brand, in 304 stainless at 9.4kg, with a removable inner pot for the ash and the padded carry bag already in the box. No accessory ladder, ever. Minus the badge.

"Lit it, got a bit of smoke for the first ten minutes like they say, then the top vents lit up in a ring and it just went clear. Four of us sat round it for three hours and nobody moved. My jumper did not stink the next day."

"Had a cheap one before this that warped out of shape by the end of the first summer. You can feel the difference the moment you lift this: it is proper thick stainless and it has not moved at all."

"The inner pot lifting out is the bit I did not think I cared about and now would not live without. Let it go cold, lift it out, tip it on the compost, drop it back. My old pit meant turning the whole thing over."

"Four stars, and only because it is not the heater some people seem to expect. It is a lovely bright fire you sit close to, not something that warms the whole patio. Read that before you buy and you will be delighted. Wet wood makes it smoke, so do not do that."

"We use the garden in October now, which we never did. Chuck it in the bag, take it to my brother’s, bring it home. It has been rained on plenty and there is not a spot of rust on it."

Lit in five minutes, clean in fifteen

No tools. No assembly. No gas bottle. Out of the bag to a proper fire in three steps.

Step 1

Set the pit on a flat, non-flammable base, well clear of fences, sheds and anything overhanging. Lift the ring lid off and put it aside.

Step 2

Load dry, seasoned hardwood split small into the inner fire pot, up to about the lower vents. Light it from the top with a natural firelighter and leave the lid off.

Step 3

Give it five to ten minutes to come up to temperature. When a ring of flame appears at the top vents, the secondary burn has kicked in and the smoke drops away. Keep feeding it dry wood and keep the fire above the lower vents.

Still deciding if Emberford fits your garden?

Is it really smokeless?

It is low-smoke, and we are not going to dress that up. For the first five to ten minutes after lighting, while the walls come up to temperature, it smokes. Once the secondary burn kicks in (you will see a ring of flame at the top vents) it runs clean and bright, and it smokes again as it dies down. That is true of every smokeless pit on the market, including the £350 ones. What you get is an evening where nobody moves their chair, not a magic zero-smoke box.

Why does mine smoke more than the videos?

Almost always the wood. Wet or green wood burns its energy boiling the water out of itself, which produces smoke instead of the hot gas the second burn needs. Use dry, seasoned hardwood, split small, stored off the ground and under cover. The other two causes: smothering it with too much wood at once, and letting the fire drop below the lower vents so it stops drawing air.

How do I get the ash out?

Once it is completely cool, you lift the inner fire pot straight out by hand and tip the ash. It is a lift-out pot, not a slide-out tray, and the whole thing is four pieces with no tools. That answers the classic complaint about this category, which is flipping a filthy 9kg drum upside down over your lawn. Always let it go cold first: there is no rush, and hot ash is how people hurt themselves.

Will it rust, or warp?

It is 304 stainless at 9.4kg, which is the grade and the weight that resists both. The pits that warp are thin carbon steel sold under £100, and they are why the regret reviews in this category exist. Honest note: 304 resists rust, it is not immune to it, and Britain is wet. Let it cool, keep it dry, store it in its bag over winter, and it will still be straight in five years. The 2-year guarantee is there either way.

How much heat does it actually give out?

Enough to sit close around in a jumper, and not enough to warm a garden from four metres away. This is the honest trade every double-wall pit makes: the airflow that reburns the smoke also sends the heat upward rather than outward. It is a bright, sociable fire, not a patio heater. If radiant heat at a distance is what you want, a chiminea or a heater does that job better.

Can I cook on it?

It burns wood or charcoal, so you can absolutely cook over the embers once the flames die down, in the way you would over any open fire. There is no grill, griddle or cooking ring in the box and we are not selling you one. If cooking is the main event rather than a bonus, buy a proper fire pit grill.

How is it so much less than a Solo Stove?

Because you are not paying for the badge or the accessory ladder. Their pit is excellent, and then it is the stand, the lid, a £175 heat deflector and a shelter, and you are £460 to £610 in. Emberford is the same double-wall secondary burn in the same 304 stainless, with the carry bag already in the box and nothing else to buy.
